Letter to EndNote Customers from the President

Dear Colleague,

As a valued EndNote user, we would like to bring you up-to-date on some important changes that have recently occurred at Niles Software. On April 15, 1999, Niles Software was acquired by the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) and a new company named ResearchSoft was formed. ResearchSoft combines Niles Software with another ISI company, Research Information Systems (RIS, makers of Reference Manager and ProCite) into one organization. Our new company will be headquartered in Berkeley, California and I shall remain President. The entire Niles team, including our technical support and customer service groups with whom many of you are familiar, will be a part of ResearchSoft.

Allow me to briefly explain why Niles Software has decided to become part of ISI. We have experienced unprecedented growth of the EndNote product over the past 10 years, with more than 200,000 researchers and students worldwide using EndNote as their primary research tool. For several years, Niles Software has been seeking a partner in the information industry that would enable a truly integrated approach for customers to access research information and use it in their writing. The integration of the EndNote organization with the Institute for Scientific Information will realize this goal.

The Institute for Scientific Information has more than forty years of experience in providing a range of useful tools for researchers. From Current Contents to the Web of Science, ISI has led the way in making data available to researchers across disciplines. ISI brings to the desktop a database that covers more than 16,000 international journals, books, and proceedings in the sciences, social sciences, and arts and humanities.

The alliance with ISI serves to enhance the role of EndNote as a valuable tool for the triple roles of information gathering, reference management, and paper generation. ResearchSoft has the opportunity to deliver a wealth of data to our users in new and creative ways and continue the EndNote tradition of product innovation. ISI's backing will provide new cooperation in the form of cross-product compatibility among EndNote, ProCite and Reference Manager, exports to EndNote from the Web of Science, greater efficiency in getting new developments to market, and the stability to continue this forward-looking vision over the long term.

In closing, I'd like to reassure you that we shall continue to develop and support EndNote on both the Macintosh and Windows platforms with the high quality you have come to expect over the past 10 years. We'd like to thank you for using EndNote, and we look forward to serving your bibliographic research needs in the future. Please don't hesitate to contact us at (510) 559-8592 if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Richard K. Niles

President and CEO of ResearchSoft

Unprecedented Demand for EndNote - Niles Ships 200,000th Copy

March 5, 1999, Berkeley, CA - In less than one year since the launch of EndNote 3, shipments of over 40,000 new units have taken Niles beyond the 200,000 user milestone. This is a clear indicator that EndNote remains a leader in the field of bibliographic management software.

"Acceptance by customers is the best possible testament to a product," said Dr. Richard Niles, President of Niles Software Inc. "The strong demand for EndNote 3 is a positive indication that the new features we added have ensured continued customer approval. In fact, the online search capability has changed the way users do their research, using a single product to access, search and download references. This is a great achievement for Niles Software, but we will not stop here. We plan to continue developing innovative software to make EndNote an even more valuable tool."

The 200,000th copy of EndNote was purchased by Shaji Matthew Poovathinkal, a theology student in Rome, Italy. "When I was looking for a program that would assist me in my doctoral research, I came across the software EndNote. It has assisted me in my research and has drastically reduced my workload. The ease with which you can manipulate this program is incredible. I recommend it wholeheartedly to students, professors and librarians; I am sure no one would regret the choice of this software," commented Mr. Poovathinkal.

EndNote is a complete bibliographic database and management program designed to search online databases, organize references, and create one-step bibliographies in Microsoft Word and WordPerfect. More than 200,000 researchers, scholarly writers, and students use EndNote as their research tool.

Ingram Micro to Distribute EndNote - Niles Adds more International Distributors in Europe

March 1, 1999, Berkeley, CA - Niles Software announced that it has entered into an agreement with Ingram Micro, the world's leading wholesale distributor of technology products and services, to distribute EndNote in the USA and Canada. Increased demand from software retailers to stock EndNote helped drive the decision to work with Ingram Micro. Under the terms of the agreement, Ingram Micro will be able to supply both academic and commercial resellers with EndNote. "We are very excited about our agreement with Niles," states Sue Johndon, Director of Purchasing at Ingram Micro. "We are looking forward to a successful relationship together." EndNote continues to be available to academic software resellers through The Douglas Stewart Company and NACSCorp Inc.

To support the growing global demand for EndNote, Niles Software has appointed two new distributors to represent the EndNote product. Scientific Solutions SA in Switzerland and Software Cientifico in Spain will provide sales and support for customers in these markets. These new distributors will provide customers in Switzerland and Spain with local support as well as local purchasing. With these additional appointments, Niles Software now has distributors serving customers in more than seventeen countries around the world.

EndNote Supports Contributions to Leading Journals

As part of a new campaign to acknowledge the scholarly contributions which EndNote users make to a broad range of research-oriented disciplines, Niles Software has undertaken an innovative "Journal of the Week" campaign. The goal of this program is to reward EndNote users for the scholarly articles they contribute to major journals. In a recent survey of the current issues of Science, the Journal of the American Medical Association, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Developmental Psychology, and a handful of other major journals, 94 published authors were found to be users of EndNote. Each was sent an EndNote T-shirt, as well as congratulations on their research achievement. One of the first recipients, Ofer Bar-Yosef, a Professor of Prehistoric Archeology at Harvard University, commented "I am a veteran Endnote user and shall continue to use it to compile the bibliographies for my papers and articles. EndNote has always been a fantastic, easy-to-use, one-step tool, making my academic life easier."

EndNote 3.0: The First Internet Search Client that Searches Remote Databases and Creates Bibliographies

March 4, 1998, Berkeley, CA - Niles Software, Inc. has announced a major upgrade to EndNote that allows users to search remote bibliographic databases on the Internet and includes better integration with electronic publications.

The First Search Client built into a Bibliographic Package
Currently researchers must go through a complicated multiple-step process to download references from online databases and import them into their personal bibliographic database. This process is complex because online searching must be done in one program, and the bibliographic tasks in another. EndNote 3.0 renders this multiple-step process obsolete by integrating the two functions into one program.

The new program will ship with more than 100 connection files that will instantly link the user to resources such as university card catalogs, the Library of Congress and more specialized databases such as MEDLINE, PsycInfo, and ERIC. To connect to any of these sources, the user simply opens the connection file and can begin searching, just as they would in their own EndNote database. This enables EndNote users to standardize on one interface to search for bibliographic data anywhere in the world without having to learn multiple search interfaces. Users simply drag and drop selected references into their local EndNote database!

The All-in-One Solution
This new functionality makes EndNote 3.0 the first search client that creates bibliographies. "Users simply open a connection and they're online and searching!" said Dr. Richard K. Niles, President of the company. "They can search the remote database and then easily transfer the search results to their own database and build a bibliography instantly. For example: a user who opens a connection to Medline, can easily search for articles about gene therapy and breast cancer published in 1997. They will find about 15 references. They may decide to keep 10 of these references and after further research cite some of references in their next research paper."

Link to Full Text Articles
The new version also includes a feature allowing users to launch a web browser from within EndNote and direct it to a URL. "More and more academic journals are available in full text on the web, and many online bibliographic databases include URLs that link to these full text articles. As online publishing becomes ubiquitous, EndNote becomes the card catalog of a virtual library," Niles said. "Let's look at our previous example, in which a user downloaded 10 references from Medline. With one simple command, the researcher can switch from one of these references to read the full article."

EndNote is a bibliographic database program used by more than 150,000 researchers, information professionals, and students in more than 100 countries. The program stores, manages, and searches for bibliographic references in a user's database. The program is also a bibliography maker: users insert citations from their database into Microsoft Word and WordPerfect documents and EndNote will create the bibliography in one step.

Requirements
EndNote 3.0 runs on Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 3.1 and Macintosh computers. The program can run on any PC with a 386DX/25 MHz or higher processor with a minimum of 8 MB of RAM. The new features require a standard connection to the Internet and a web browser. Remote databases must be Z39.50 compliant.

Niles and BioMedNet Collaborate to Offer Improved Service to Evaluated Medline and EndNote Users

Berkeley, CA, October 9, 1998 - Niles Software Inc. and BioMedNet today announced the launch of a new feature that offers seamless integration between BioMedNet's Evaluated MEDLINE service and EndNote, the world's leading bibliographic software package. BioMedNet's web-based Medline service now includes a "Direct to EndNote" option, allowing EndNote users to instantly transfer search results to their EndNote databases. This close integration eliminates the extra steps of downloading and importing.

"This collaborative development was designed to enhance the productivity of researchers who use both EndNote and the Evaluated Medline service," said Richard K. Niles, President of Niles Software Inc. "Now bringing bibliographic references into EndNote from Evaluated Medline is easier than ever before. Users conduct a search on Evaluated Medline and then simply click a button to have the search results transferred to their EndNote database and create a bibliography instantly."

"Evaluated Medline is BioMedNet's most popular service, and teaming up with Niles Software Inc. has helped us to make it even better. User feedback told us that importing references could often be a frustrating experience. But with the new Direct Import feature, references go straight into EndNote with no format conversion or separate import step to worry about. All of which means BioMedNet members can spend less time struggling with their computers, and more time doing science," said Matthew Cockerill Ph.D., Product Manager, BioMedNet Ltd.

To take advantage of this new "Direct to EndNote" option, EndNote 3.0 users can download the required updater free of charge from the Niles web site. The updater is located at http://www.endnote.com/support/enbiomednet.asp

EndNote is a complete bibliographic database and management program designed to search online databases, organize references, and create one-step bibliographies in Microsoft Word and WordPerfect. More than 200,000 researchers, scholarly writers, and students use EndNote as their research tool.

BioMedNet is the Internet community for biological and medical researchers. BioMedNet features hundreds of online biological and medical full-text journals, Evaluated Medline, job listings and career resources, and the Galapagos Bookshop. There is no charge to becoming a BioMedNet member. Evaluated Medline, BioMedNet's free Medline service includes full-text links, Document Delivery Service from the British Library, and links to PubMed.
