| What’s the difference in functionality between the student, upgrade, and full versions of EndNote? |
top |
There is no difference in the functionality of the student, upgrade, or full versions.
| How many computers can I install my single-user edition on? |
top |
The
individual End User License Agreement allows a single license holder
to install EndNote on up to three of his/her computers. This assumes
that the license holder is the only person using EndNote on these
computers. An example of this arrangement is a license holder who has
a work computer, a laptop for offsite use, and a home computer. Note the single-user edition is sold for Mac OS computers or Windows computers separately. Contact the Thomson Reuters Sales team
for special pricing on an alternative operating system license.

top |
Online purchases of the download by default do not automatically receive a CD. You can copy the downloaded file to a CD and create your own archival backup. For an additional fee you can have a back-up CD sent to you.

| Where can I locate my product key or serial number? |
top |
EndNote X1 and later use a 25-character alpha-numeric ‘Product Key’ to verify installation. This is different from the numeric ‘Serial Number’ used in the older products.
Tips on locating the EndNote product key (X1 and later):
- Product box- the product key is on a sticker on the back of the CD sleeve.
- DVD case (plastic clamshell)- the sticker with the product key and serial number is on the case under the CD itself.
- Download- the Product key, also known as the "Unlock code" is in the email confirmation.
Serial Number: The serial number will be in the confirmation email you received if you purchased the download version. For EndNote 9 and X, the serial number should be on the inside cover of the accompanying Getting Started Guide. For the EndNote 9 and X Upgrade versions, the serial number will be on the outside of the CD case. For older versions of EndNote, the EndNote serial number should be on the inside cover of the Manual that came with the program.
| Can I upgrade from any previous version of EndNote? |
top |
Yes. You can upgrade to the latest EndNote version from any previous version. You will need the serial number from a previous edition to complete the installation of the new version.
| Do I need the serial number from my current version to purchase the upgrade online? |
top |
The serial number from your current version is not required for the online purchase but will be necessary to complete the installation.
| Does the upgrade require the software to be already installed on the computer? |
top |
The upgrade version of EndNote is a fully independent installer which does not require a previous version installed, though you will need your serial number from the previous version. The upgrade version installer will install a complete set of program files.
If you do have a previous version installed, we recommend that you back up any existing EndNote library files and any customized content files (e.g. styles, connection files, and import filters), close all open programs, and then uninstall any older versions by selecting "Add/Remove Programs" from the Windows Control Panel (or trashing the previous EndNote folders if on a Mac).
Once any older versions have been uninstalled, run the EndNote installer. This will create a new EndNote program folder, and you can then move any database or content files into this new folder.
| Should I uninstall my old version before installing the new version? |
top |
While this is not strictly necessary, we always recommend that you uninstall any previous versions (including Demo versions) to avoid confusion later.
- First back up any existing EndNote library files and any customized content files (e.g. styles, connection files, and filters).
- Close all open programs, and then uninstall any older versions by selecting "Add/Remove Programs" from the Windows Control Panel (or trash the old folders on a Mac).
- Once any older versions have been uninstalled, run the EndNote installer.
This will create a new EndNote program folder, and you can then move any backed up library or content files into this new folder.
| What do I need to know when upgrading from version 7 or earlier? |
top |
EndNote versions 8 and later have a new library structure, which is not compatible with EndNote 7 or earlier. More information on this can be found in this FAQ.
EndNote 8 or later should be able to convert any library from an earlier version of EndNote. You may want to use the "Recover Library" command on your library before upgrading to EndNote 8 or later to ensure that the data in the library is cleaned up. Go to this FAQ for information on how to recover a library. If you do have problems converting a library to EndNote 8 or later, we can always help you through the process.
If you are upgrading from EndNote 4 or earlier, you will need to first unformat any documents that you wish to use with EndNote 8 or later, as these versions will not recognize formatted citations that were inserted with EndNote 4 or earlier.
If you have any output styles that were created in version 4, EndNote 8 or later will not recognize these styles, until they are first edited using EndNote 5, 6 or 7. If you need to use any of these old output styles, you can send them to us here in tech support and we will convert them and send them back to you.
