CWYW 21: My numbered citations are not starting with number 1, even though I'm using a style that sorts the citations in the order of appearance. How can I resolve this?

Answer: Check to see if citation number 1 is in a text box within Word, such as within a figure legend or a caption underneath a figure. EndNote formats the citations appearing in text boxes first and will sort them at the top of your reference list. The suggested workaround is to convert the text boxes to frames:

  1. Save a backup copy of your document.

  2. Locate one of the text boxes that contains an EndNote citation.

  3. Right-click on the text box and choose "Format > Text Box".

  4. Select the Text Box tab and click the Convert to Frame button, then click OK to confirm the conversion.

  5. Now try to format bibliography and see if it makes any difference with this citation.

Note: With Word 2002, 2003 and 2007, if the text box is on a drawing canvas, you must drag it off to complete this procedure.

If this resolves the problem with this citation, convert your text boxes to frames and you should get the desired result. Alternately, you can simply remove the citations that are in text boxes to resolve this issue.
